We define a city food forest as an intentionally designed, multi-layered plant community that mixes edible trees, shrubs, perennials, and complementary annuals to mimic a natural forest’s structure. Designing Food Forests for People, Place, and Climate

Site assessment: start with listening

We match canopy, understory, shrubs, herbs, groundcovers, roots, and vines to local conditions and to each other. In salty, coastal sites we pick salt-tolerant shrubs; in heat islands we favor deep-rooted trees and reflective mulches. We mix natives for resilience with adapted exotics that reliably produce food. Guilds pair a fruit tree with a nitrogen-fixer, mulch-makers, pollinator plants, and pest-repellents.

Practical design elements we always detail

We draw paths, seating, and tree islands at concept stage—never after planting. Typical specifications we use:
