We’ll build a compact window hydroponic herb setup that fits any kitchen sill, guiding us through picking containers, adding nutrients and lights, planting seedlings or seeds, and easy maintenance so we enjoy fresh, flavorful herbs year-round right on our sill.

Step 1 — Pick the Perfect Spot and System

Who knew our sill could be a mini farm? Let’s choose light, space, and the easiest system for our lifestyle.

Pick a sunny window that gets 4–6 hours of direct or bright indirect light. Choose a south- or west-facing sill when possible. Measure sill depth and width so containers fit comfortably and don’t block access to curtains or outlets.

Decide whether to add a small LED grow light if natural light is limited. Plan power routing and keep cords safe from water. Consider noise and water access: wick systems are quiet and low-maintenance; ebb-and-flow tubs are simple; compact recirculating pump setups give faster growth but need a pump and a little more care.

Sketch a quick layout that shows pot positions, power cable runs, and a spot to store nutrient solution and pH test supplies. Label containers and note planting dates so we track progress and avoid mix-ups.

Start with forgiving herbs and seedlings to speed success:

Basil, chives, parsley, cilantro, mint

Avoid very tall or heavy plants like rosemary or full tomato varieties that stress small sills. Check building rules for window displays and ensure adequate ventilation.

Step 2 — Assemble the Reservoir, Pump, and Lighting

Build it like we mean business — low noise, no leaks, and a tidy setup that pays us back in flavor.

Gather containers, net pots, growing medium, and a reservoir tub sized to fit under the sill (for example, a shallow plastic bin or repurposed food-safe tote).

Drill holes in the lid for net pots or build a lid from a food-safe cutting board and cut openings to match pot size.

Install a small submersible pump and tubing for a recirculating system; place the pump where it won’t knock against the tub.

Place wicks from the medium into the reservoir for a wick system so capillary action feeds roots (use cotton or nylon rope).

Position the pump on a timer using 4–6 minute cycles every 30–60 minutes to avoid constant running and root stress.

Mix the hydroponic nutrient at half-strength to start, then adjust after a week based on plant response.

Test and adjust pH to an herb-friendly 5.5–6.5 with our pH kit.

Set the LED grow light 6–12 inches above plants and use adjustable hangers so we raise it as plants grow.

Manage cables neatly with clips to prevent accidents.

Label inlet/outlet tubes, attach an air stone if desired, and keep a small spare-parts kit nearby:

Step 3 — Planting: Seedlings, Seeds, and Spacing

Rinse seedlings gently to remove soil, holding the crown and running lukewarm water until roots are clean.
Place seedlings into net pots filled with coconut coir or rockwool cubes, spreading roots lightly so they don’t coil.
Sow seeds directly for small herbs; for example, sow basil about 1/8″ (3 mm) deep and chives on the surface.
Keep seeds and new transplants moist by misting with a spray bottle until they germinate.
Space plants so leaves won’t touch—avoid crowding to reduce disease; imagine a 2–4″ gap for small herbs, 4–6″ for larger ones.
Label each net pot with the plant name and planting date so we track progress.
Set light timers to 14–16 hours daily for most culinary herbs; remember shorter days can make basil leggy.
Top up the reservoir and monitor EC and pH daily for the first week, then every few days once stable.
Prune emerging flowers to encourage leaf growth, and harvest young leaves regularly to promote bushiness.
Expect delicate root development the first two weeks and avoid overfeeding.
Keep a notebook or photo log of dates, pH, nutrient changes, and notes so we learn our kitchen microclimate.
Expect harvestable leaves in about six weeks.

Step 4 — Maintain, Troubleshoot, and Harvest Smart

Harvest more, stress less: simple maintenance and quick fixes keep our herbs producing and tasting great.

Check water level and top up with fresh water plus nutrients weekly, and top up more often in warm weather (we refill every 3–4 days during heat waves).

Measure pH and adjust to 5.5–6.5; test EC and pH immediately if leaves yellow or curl — we once fixed yellowing basil by lowering EC and raising pH slightly.

Watch for common issues and act fast:

Root rot: Improve circulation, clean the reservoir occasionally, and replace stagnant water.
Nutrient burn: Flush the system with fresh water and reduce nutrient strength by 25%.
Pests: Use sticky traps for fungus gnats or introduce ladybugs/aphidoletes for aphids.

Prune herbs regularly to encourage branching and pinch flowers early to keep leaves flavorful. Harvest by snipping outer stems—never uproot. Treat basil and parsley as leafy crops and take no more than one-third at a time to keep plants productive.

Inspect roots and replace medium every 6–8 weeks as needed; sanitize the reservoir between crops with a mild bleach solution (1:10 bleach:water), then rinse well.

Boost light hours and slightly lower nutrient concentration in winter to avoid salt buildup. Keep notes on fixes and winners. For short trips, use a wick system or ask a neighbor; automate only if we’re confident.
